JP Morgan Chase Admits To Mortgage Fraud And Pays Fines For Gaming The Housing Market Collaps

Got to love how they made over $1 Billion on the deal and their fine is less than 10% of that. What a JOKE!

WASHINGTON (AP) — JPMorgan Chase & Co. has agreed to pay $153.6 million to settle civil fraud charges that it misled buyers of complex mortgage investments just as the housing market was collapsing.

J.P. Morgan Securities, a division of the powerful Wall Street bank, failed to inform investors that a hedge fund helped select the investment portfolio and then bet that it would fail, the Securities and Exchange Commission said. Among the investors who lost money on the deal were autoworkers for General Motors, a Lutheran financial organization in Minneapolis, and a retirement services company in Topeka, Kan.

The settlement announced Tuesday is one of the most significant legal actions targeting Wall Street’s role in the 2008 financial crisis. It comes a year after Goldman Sachs & Co. paid $550 million to settle similar charges.

Still, the settlement amounts to less than 1 percent of the bank’s 2010 net income of $17.4 billion — which is less than what JP Morgan earns in one week.

In its announcement, the SEC said it had also charged Edward Steffelin with misleading investors. Steffelin headed the team at GSCP, an investment firm that was supposed to have been selecting the portfolio of mortgage securities in the $1.1 billion deal.

Sing-a-Long Scientology Video Surfaces

 Maureen O’Connor — Ooh, look, another propaganda video from Hollywood’s favorite cult, the Church of Scientology. This one appears to have been filmed in the early ’90s, and features a fascinating shot of Church leader David Miscavige singing a Scientology hymn with his cronies.

The Village Voice reports that this guy, in the “weird Hermes/goatse shirt,” is Miscavige.

The lady at left is thought to be Miscavige’s mysterious wife Shelly, who has reportedlybeen missing since 2006. To her right are two former Scientology bigwigs now thought to be “in the Hole,” a manmade purgatory the New Yorker described as “a pair of double-wide trailers” south of Los Angeles, where misbehaving Scientologists are made to do “group confessions all day and all night.”

Update: Voice editor Tony Ortega tweets that this “Hole” refers to the Church’s Rehabilitation Project Force, which is either a faith-based counseling program or punitive prison camp, depending who you ask. You know your religion is hardcore when “in the Hole” could refer to one of many manmade purgatories.

If it weren’t for all the disappeared people, this silly Scientology sing-a-long would be nerdy fun. But since three-quarters of its cast is allegedly missing or “in the Hole” these days, it’s pretty creepy. [Village Voice]

Lyrics include lines such as “Knowing the truth will set us free, Take us from clear to eternity, For a future we thought would never be, We stand tall.” Interspersed in the video are images of Scientology centers around the world, book giveaways, founder L. Ron Hubbard and boats on a “Religious Freedom Crusade.”

First Time Home Buyers Down 35%, Probably Because Almost 35% Of Them Are Unemployed!

Great article on how the housing market has been in a steady decline since 2006 even with two bail out plans.  One of the worst sectors is with first time home buyers.  This is normally a larger portion of used home sales because they graduate from college and get good jobs and then want to own a place of their own.  Well at least it used to work that way.  Now almost 40% of college grads cannot find full time work.  Most are working part time or for far less than they thought they would make when they entered the “Real World”.  Also the numbers of how many are truly unemployed are way lower than what actually get reported.  This happens because many of then are not eligible for unemployment because they have never held a full time or for some even a part time paid position.  So what we are really looking at is that 40% of college grads who worked through college are still under employed, the actual number is most likely much higher, it could be as high as 60%.  Until our young intelligent work force gets proper employment and wages, the housing market and our economy will never rebound.  The worst part is this is cutting into when these young adults would be saving the most money, which could cause draw backs for year to come, basically putting the new college grads behind 5-10 years on their life schedule. If that trend continues we will be lucky if Social security and other social benefits programs can remain funded through this decade.

Looks Like RIM (Blackberry) Is Changing Its Name To R.I.P.

TORONTO (Reuters) – BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has started to hand out layoff notices after it said on Friday it would cut an unspecified number of jobs, a local newspaper said on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the Canadian company could not be reached immediately to confirm the report in the Waterloo Region Record, which serves the Ontario city where RIM is headquartered.

The report gave no specific numbers on the layoff notices, but noted that RIM employs about 17,500 workers globally, including 9,000 in the Waterloo region.

Shares of RIM, which once dominated the business segment of the smartphone market, have dropped about 27 percent since it revealed dismal quarterly results and lowered its full-year outlook on Friday.

The stock is down more than 50 percent this year after a series of missteps as it tries to keep pace with Apple Inc and other innovators in the smartphone and tablet computer markets.
